Noise when using cond. mic
April 2 2002 at 12:54 AM

I am making recording using the condensor mic-vocal, guitar,harp-live. When I play them back the voice is very clear, but there is a kind of hiss, static like sound in the backround. I set the thrush to 15 and it gets better, but still present. Is this as good as the condensor mic gets, am I doing something wrong, or is the unit possibly defective? How much better quality can I get from a decent external mike. Thanks to you all for all of the help. I would be lost without you. Walter

Of hiss and thingsApril 2 2002, 8:14 AM

I also find there to be a lot of hiss, but this is a relative thing. How loud is the hiss relative to the signal? Do you only hear hiss during silence or also when recording a source like voice or guitar?

I dislike the built in noise reduction, which as far as I can tell is just a noise gate; therefore it only cuts noise (and sound) below a certain threshold but not when recording a source.

Play around with the limiter, I've had some success there in reducing hiss, although this makes no sense since the limiter should increase noise relative to signal, but whatever.

You could also play with EQ settings, but I wouldn't. You'll end up reducing the high end a lot just to reduce noise a little.

My best advice is to record as clean as possible, then use noise reduction on your computer (I think Cool Edit has a decent noise reduction).

Hope that helps
