PS-02 to computer w/o soundcard...
March 7 2002 at 1:33 AM

I've got a laptop with nothing but a mono (and crappy) mic in jack. Part of the reason I got the PS-02 was because I didn't want to mess with an expensive USB or PCMCIA recording interface. So now I'm looking to get some of the stuff I've recorded on my new (and wonderful) PS-02 turned into mp3's.

Card manager software makes transfering tracks a no-brainer. But what about the drum and bass? I found "Export a song to SMF" which yields a tiny drum and bass loop readable by winamp (but not cakewalk, 'cause it's not a .wav) I think this is what I'm looking for. But what the heck is SMF, and how do I get it to a WAV file that's useful to me?

thanks a lot, this forum's been very useful for me!

P.S. I'd also love advice on turning this stuff into mp3's...

SMF is Standard Midi Format (I think). You need to import this as a midi file.

I just plug a 1/8" stereo jack into the line in on the Laptop and a 1/4" on the line out on the PS-02, record on the Sound Recorder (I've saved a 3-1/2 minute template to start with), save as a *.wav file. Then I can burn the song on a CD, convert it, or import to whatever other format I want.

You need Cakewalk Music Creator 2002.
It lets you import .Wav and Midi. Once it's in you can assign different midi patches to both Bass and Drums.
When you have finished the mix you can export the whole thing as a WAV or MP3.

Try PowerTracks by PGMusic (www.pgmusic.com). It handles both midi and audio and costs only $29. It's hard to beat at that price.

bought software. More problemsMarch 29 2002, 12:41 AM

So I got PGMusic PowerTracks. Looks great. I imported my .wav files no problem. Still having trouble with the midi files though. I double-click on my drum file in powertracks, and it tells me, "file not found"

Another oddity: winamp plays my drum loop. Shouldn't this not be possible if the drum track is actually a midi file? Also, the extension (which should be .mid) doesn't show up on the file. My computer recognizes it as a "winamp media file."

Ahhrg...

Winamp plays midi filesMarch 29 2002, 8:31 AM

Winamp can play midi files.

If you can't see the file extension, you need to go into START/Settings/Folder Options --> View --> Under hidden files click Show All Files.

Make sure you convert PS-02 files to midi files using the Zoom software. Also bear in mind that they will not sound the same on your computer as on the Zoom since the sound bank is different.

I suggest recording the drum&bass tracks as a wav file, then line it up with your other tracks in the multi-track software of choice.

Good luck

some progressMarch 29 2002, 12:47 PM

Okay, take note: you (well, at least I) have to add a .mid extension to the drum track filename, or else my recording software will not recognize it. Now I've got a functional midi file.

Which, of course, brings me to the next problem which is that I need to re-map the file to appropriate drum voices. What a pain -- does zoom provide drum kits for re-mapping? Probably not.

Recording to .wav is a poor option for me, as I have nothing but a very crappy mic in on my laptop. I get almost no bass out of it. Also, I have trouble alligning the audio tracks with the drum track using this method. Any advise? Maybe I should just suck it up and buy a usb soundcard...

the old input output trickMarch 29 2002, 1:09 PM

patch a stereo mini plug from headphones out to the input jack of the Zoom; record the song (just the drum and bass tracks) to the Zoom; transfer and convert that track to a wav on your computer. It will line up with other tracks automatically since it starts recording when drums start at beginning of song.

And by the way, are you saying your sound card has no line in? I've never heard of that, even in a laptop

*forehead slap* .... good idea!March 29 2002, 1:57 PM

Why didn't I think of that??? Thank's a million!
