recording drums to wav??
March 9 2002 at 10:04 PM

Ok, what ive got is about 9 tracks of vocals and guitars/keys all extracted and put together in cooledit2k. I have programed the drum/bass lines for the song too but because im extracting tracks to the multitrack in cooledit im not able to extract the drum/bass the same way.

So what ive tried to do is record the drum bass line solo to my computer and line it up with the other tracks... sounds good rite? Wrong. I have no idea whats going on but the drum/bass wav file is lagged... it plays with the other tracks for about 4 secs then starts to lag behind until it is pointless to continue.

All tracks are at the default 31250 hz, and im recording the drums at the same rate... what the hell is going on? I'm very confused, and dont know alot about sample rates and such but im guessin its got somethin to do with this.

Any suggestions?

Cheers,
Rob.

Double CheckMarch 10 2002, 8:11 AM

Rob … I remember seeing other posts that mention problems related to exporting. Some software i.e. CoolEdit won’t default to the PS-02 required 31.250 KHz. I would double check what your doing to make sure that whenever your exporting is at the right frequency.

Thanks for the reply, well... when I create a new file in cooledit it asks what frequency I want, but it defaults to 31250 because cooledit recognises that 100% of everything else im bringing in is 31250.

I also tried to use goldwave to record the drums.. and input the rate 31250 myself... and same deal once i got the wav into cooledit. So I know im bringing it in at the same rate... Ive also checked the other tracks in cooledit to make sure they werent upsampled or something and they are indeed still 31250... go figure.

This is driving me nuts...

Rob.

Try 42KhzMarch 11 2002, 5:38 PM

I think it needs to be at 42Khz, don't ask me why though.

Try the stretch tool.March 11 2002, 7:22 PM

One of the the things you may want to try is to note the length in HH/MM/SS of the two pieces you are trying to match up. Pick the STRETCH tool and choose time strech (preserve pitch) option and see if you can force the time length into sync.

Well I figured it out after 2 days of screwing around with it. It was literally the last thing I tried, then again isn't it always? heh

As soon as you get the tracks into cooledit or whatever, upsample them to 44100. You'll end up upsampling the whole thing in the end anyway so it will save that step later. When it comes to recording the drum part, record it at 44100 and it will synch properly. I have NO idea why recording the drums into the computer at 31250 caused lag when all other tracks were at the same rate, but it did.

Anyway thats what I ended up doing in the end and I'm synched up. Thanx to those who responded with ideas, twas a frustrating experince hehe.

Cheers,
Rob.
