help needed - quick and dirty recording? February 19 2002 at 1:28 PM
Hi, I've read the manual a couple of times but didn't see this in there (doesn't mean it's not there of course :>). I had a couple of ideas for riffs/tunes etc, while I was traveling recently. But by the time I'd laid down a backing track on the ps02 I'd completely forgotten what it was I'd come up with. Which kinda takes a way a bit of the spontaneity.... So, what I want to do is basically what I used to use a dictation machine for i.e. hit record and get something down before it leaves my mind. And tidy it up later.
Solution 1 - quick, dirty, and on the beat:
Set the rhythm to just a metronome click with no bass line so you can record audio tracks to a given rhythm. Practice setting this up so you can do it quickly, or prepare several songs with a metronome click track and empty audio tracks.
Solution 2 - quicker, dirtier, and off the beat:
Just record your audio tracks without any drums or bass.

Quick Ideas

You can set-up a SONG with the minimum 2 bars in it, set it to Loop and then play until you run out of memory.
In my opinion the quickest method is to set up a 2 bar song with the "Metronome" as the Drum pattern. Then set the speed to the speed that you want. When you've recorded you're Guitar (or whatever), you can go back at any time afterwards and change the drum/bass pattern as many times as you like. The only important thing to remember is that you cannot change the Tempo afterwards otherwise your recording will be out of sync with the drum track.
Alternatively, for a more inspirational backing, choose a basic drum pattern and turn down the Bass.
Just remember that the Drum pattern does not have to be the length of the song as you can use the loop function whilst recording audio.
Hope that helps

Prepare your PS-02 for inspiration

Capturing ideas when they happen is what the PS-02 is all about.
Some things you may want to do to be ready.
1) Set up a rhythm pattern that is just a "click track" with no bass part.
Turn on the repeat mode and so it will loop.
This will keep you in time so a drum pattern can be dropped in later.
2) ALWAYS use a PBM (beats per..) thet is an even number.
This way the tempo can be devided or doubled evenly to a whole number.
3) Get to know the record options and modes by heart.
4) Keep a cheep microphone with the unit at all times.
Like the ones most people got with those old portable cassette machines and just throw away.
You can get them at junk stores for nothing and they work great.
5) Do something with the takes before you forget what the inspiration was.
Thanks for the info!

Gotta love the internet... Thanks for all of the great tips. Guess I now know what I'll be doing this evening.
Cheers,
Mike.
