recording to pc ,mp3? realaudio?
February 16 2002 at 4:38 AM

Up till now ive just been using my ps02 to record on and then master to tape.
I now want to store my songs as files to put on a website.
(im no pc expert.)
I can record them in wav format ok,(with the built in windows thingy) but i assume mp3 or realaudio would be better? smaller files?
Where do i get the software and which one should i use.
can you get it free?
i notice most of you cats use mp3
cheers!

Recording formatsFebruary 16 2002, 9:29 AM

Andy:
Probably the simplest and easiest route is to get a 1/8" stereo mini-plug cord that you plug into the headphone output of the PS-02 and the line in input of the sound card of your PC. Then you can press play on the PS-02 and record directly into the PC.
The Windows sound thingy will record from the sound card, but for more flexibility on the PC side, you can download/use something like N-track, Goldwave, Sound Forge, etc. To find these, just do a search on the 'net. These programs can record in .wav format, then convert to mp3. There are also smaller free utilities on the 'net that only do the conversion process.
In my opinion, it's better to edit the sound (compression, reverb, EQ, etc.) while in .wav format before converting to mp3. There is a lot more info on this board, so be sure and read it.

I would recommend Goldwave, its just the easiest thing out there and the Demo version lets you do what you need to fairly simply.

Go to:
http://www.goldwave.com/release.html

Download the self installing v4.25.exe

Simply run a line out of the headphone jack on the PS02 into the sound in of the PC... or use a 1/4 inch adaptor to take it from the output of the PS02 to PC In.

Double click on the speaker in the lower right of your toolbar.. then under Options > Properties > Recording make sure 'line in' is selected. Then launch Goldwave, select File > New > Set up recording quality and recording time then OK... the rest will be pretty easy to do from there. You can save as MP3 or WAV etc.

Anyway this is what I do if I Just want a quick mixdown and the quality is generally pretty damn good.

Cheers,
Cenobyte.

thanks chaps!
Downloaded goldwave and an mp3 encoder(learnt all about these on the goldwave site) and ive already created my first two mp3s!
just a couple more things - i cannot seem to get my line in working on my pc - i am recording through mic in - is there any problems with this?
will line in be better qaulity?
line in is elected but i get no sound.
And the scope you see on goldwave - am i right in thinking i should try to keep the recordings below the 1.0 to stop distortion.
if so how far?
cheers.

Line-in vs. Mic-inFebruary 17 2002, 5:30 PM

Andy:
On most sound cards, the line-in input is stereo, while the mic-in input is mono. The PS-02 headphone output is stereo, which should be plugged into a stereo input on the sound card.

ok - ive got the line in on my pc working and i have a 1/4 inch adapter.
is it best to record from the output of the ps02 or the headphone socket?
ps
im getting there! slowly.

use the headphone jackFebruary 19 2002, 5:43 PM

assuming a relatively short cord (a few feet at most) I'd go with the headphone jack using a stereo mini to stereo mini cord. Otherwise you have to put an adaptor on your 1/4 inch plug, which better be stereo, or you're going mono into the sound card. In any event, I'd stick with the headphone jack.
