Getting better sounds
February 3 2002 at 12:16 PM

Bit of a tease this actually, cos I'm talking about using those knobs on your guitar to help enhance the base sounds included with the PS02. I was trying to get a basic SRV type twangy/crunch blues tone with my American Series Strat, but none of the base tones got me near what I was after, even tweaking gain settings, taking off delay/reverb etc.

Of course, being a guitar player and not a musician
I had the volume and both tone pots set at ten on my guitar, using the Bridge pickup (what are the other two for?). So having heard about rolling off volume to clean up sounds and having worked out which direction the pots rotated away from 10, I picked the LatinRock patch, set the volume pot down at seven, changed to the middle pickup (gasp!) and rolled both tone pots down to six.

Result - a really nice edge of distortion rhythm tone and a warm but biting lead tone with the volume back at ten. Obviously we are talking Strat here, but even if you just have a single pickup and no tone control, messing with the volume is worth trying, if you find the digital distortion too harsh in most patches.

These little box of tricks are great, but sometimes you need to give them a little help to get the sound you want.
