fast odd meter 9/8 rhythm impossible? January 23 2002 at 1:36 PM
To program odd meter rhytms like 9/8 I use a 4 bar rhythm consisting of 1 bar of 3 beats and 3 bars of 2 beats. Programming in eights is impossible so I have to use 1/4 based rhythms. Problem is speed.
Using 1/4's as fake 1/8's gives a maximum speed of 250 on the PS-02 which is in fact 125 for real 1/4 's and I want 160.
Is there a way to do this?
To get a fast 9/8 with all real tempo posibilities take Armins pattern editor and make a eight bar pattern with division 24 and a one bar pattern with division 24. Put the eights one the 1/4 and finish the pattern in the one bar second pattern. In these 36 X 1/4 you have to put the rhythm 4 times to get a perfect loop.Put them together in a song and you have a 9 bar figure playing a perfect 3-2-2-2 ---9/8th rhythm.
(In my first experiment I used bars instead of 1/4 which gave the tempo limitation..now tempo 80 is the same as virtual 320 in the wrong one)

I forgot to mention that the 24 division is nice for offbeat basline accents otherwise a 1/4 division would do.
A 23/8 pattern as used by Nick Didkovski on his record Skin can be made by 4 - 5 bar patterns and 1- 3 bar pattern put together in a 23 bar song.
So doing the 2 bar pattern limit of the PS-02 is overcome with the song mode but the programming is tricky and only bar one starts on the beginning of the rhythm, the others start on a offbeat part off the rhythm and only in the Songmode the whole rhythm is audible.
End of this monologue.
