Crippling flaw to PS-02?

I am hearing that the auto punch feature does not allow you to hear any other audio tracks (except bass and rythym). This sounds like a disastrous problem. What if you need to punch in on some harmony? Some phrase where the timing of another track is crucial? Also, I record alot of jazz trio type music, my own bass, no drums--- therefore I would have no reference to listen to when punching. This leads me to thinking of returning my PS-02. Does this limitation apply to the Boss BR532? I notice by its image that it has a footswitch port. This leads me to believe that it might be more user friendly in punch capabilities. Any and all advice/input will be appreciated.
Thanks,
K. Dheano

This is an odd limitation, but obviously intended since it can play the tracks while you record them.

Fortunately, I'm using the PS02 as a complimentary device to my PC recording stuff, so it doesn't really affect me much.

I had a Boss BR532 briefly, but I never tried its punch feature. I was never able to get a tone that I could stand to record in the first place, let alone needing to go back and fix something I'd already recorded.

All in all, the BR532 looks like it is much more of a recorder than the Zoom and Korg products which appear to be more intended as personal rehearsal devices. Of course, the BR532 has its own limitations as a recorder like no channel EQ on inputs, no effects loop, etc...

I wouldn't exactly describe it as a crippling flaw...November 23 2001, 6:44 PM

Firstly go to the audio menu press play and then pause.
Use the cursor keys to move to the position you would like to "punch in".Press record and the red light starts flashing. You can record over the last track you recorded and still hear all the other audio(provided you have audio to record over)The only problem is you need a third arm to start and stop the recording smoothly but hey what are friends(or relatives) for?
Plus seeing as you play jazz I'm sure you can find a pause in between bars.

Don't forget that for every percieved limitation there are many different solutions - ie Don't make any rash decisions you'll regret.Good luck!

Bailed on the PS-02November 23 2001, 10:34 PM

Well.... after much consideration, I returned the PS-02. I was really looking for something that would behave more like my multitrack cassette machine, so I decided to try out the Br-532. No, there are no EQ controls, but a mixer will fix that. And the guitar effects are not as good as the PS, but being a jazzer, that's not too big a deal. So far I like what I see in it. So I wish to say a big Thanks to those who replied to my posts--- You gave me some good info. One regret is that there does not seem to be a forum like this for the Boss. Too bad. Lots of good ideas out here.
Regards to all,

Thanks for the tip. Spent all day playing with the Boss, and it is exactly what I wanted. Far exceeds the PS-02 in recording capabilities. Miss the guitar effects of the Zoom, but I have a 505 processor, so it makes up for that. Thanks to all in this group who, by their honest opinions and advice, pointed me in the right direction.

Bounce rather than punch.November 26 2001, 1:36 PM

I have hade to make punches on a track where I had to be able to hear the other tracks while performing the punch. After some thought it came to me that if I didn't like a part, I could punch it out with silence, leaving a clean hole. Then use an available "take" on another track to record the patch to and then bounce the two tracks together. Then erase the patch "take" and set that track back to normal. "Punch in" complete.

I'm sorry that we lost one to the BR532, but in terms of being a plain recorder that isn't handily carried, it is a completely different product than the Zoom offering.
