Hey, I just got myself a PS02 yesterday. MAN, this thing is EXACTLY what I needed! So far I'm liking the sounds more than my J-Station that I got a few months back, but I haven't had much time to really play with it yet.
So here's my silly question (silly because I could find out for myself through trial and error, but haven't had a chance to yet): When you download the new "Hip-Hop" and "Rock" patches, patterns, sounds, etc. from Zoom, can you load certain specific patches and sounds onto the PS02, or do you have to load the entire "Rock" or "Hip-Hop" collection (thus replacing all of the defaults and/or pre-existing user patches)?
I'm hoping you guys can tell me faster than I can screw around and find out the hard way:)
Unfortunately, the piss-poor card management software doesn't let you do useful things like pick which drum patterns you want. The PS-02 is an awesome little device, but the card manager pisses me off more and more each day.
Has anyone gotten it to work? The original thread doesn't ever seem to indicate that it worked for anyone.

How about this. Would it be possible to write custom software to interface with the smart media card? Maybe some third party person, like you or I, could write better software for it. Just a thought.

If you are talking about loading certain elements of each card you can do this with a card reader.
You can just drag and drop whatever files you want between card and pc.
If you want to keep your user patches the same just drag and drop all the other files except 'user.pch' from the card set you want to use.
I'm trying to work out exactly what each file does, the system, recorder and utility seem to always be the same anyway (i think) so theres no point replacing them, and you keep your utility menu settings, preset.pch is the 1 to 60 factory patches but the file descriptions for the others does not seem to tye up with whats described in the manual.

I'll be happy to write custom software to fiddle with those files as soon as we figure out enough about them to make it worthwhile to try. At this stage (of knowing nothing about the file format) there isn't much that can be written...

Without getting into editing the files (too way out for me)
Does anyone have a list of what replacing each file does?
I know user.pch is the user patches and sounds.syn changes the drum and bass sound but is the fac.ptch or preset.pch the other set of patches?
Is there any point in replacing the system, utility or recorder patches with ones from other card sets?

Yeah, it's pretty all or nothing... on the surface.
I just found out about the super cool hack, and I'll try it when I get a chance. What I have done though, is to make a copy of audio tracks and takes. On my PC I copied the track files to new files, and bumped up the song number. I didn't think it worked at first, because the name came up as EMPTY for that particular number... but I noticed that the the track and take data was there, and played fine. I edited the name on the ps-02 and had no problem.... But when I tried to do it again, it failed. I've noticed that the ps-02 has a lot of 'intermittent' behavior. Anyway, for those who haven't guessed yet:
where NN is the song name index - 1
T is the Track number - 1
K is the taKe number - 1
example: 55-21.aud is song #56, Track 3, Take 2
The system is comprised of these 3 files, although all of the filenames must be present for the system to be deemed 'valid':
system.sys
recorder.sys
utility.uty
FacSongs.pts is where the factory songs are stored
Songs.ptd is where user song data is stored
Sounds.syn is effect data for the DSP
FACPATCH.pch are the factory patches
PRESET.pch are the preset patches
User.pch are the user patches
MAKE SURE....
when using a PC card reader, that you carefully watch the ACCESS LIGHT on the CARD READER, and not be decieved into thinking that it's done because you can see and manipulate the files in windows explorer! Otherwise you'll loose time, data and formats.

Ive also noticed that the system sometimes does not recognise you have changed any files if you reinsert the card and load instead of turning off and back on again.
This means the card is not read completely when you load?
