Using PS02 as FX pedal
November 12 2001 at 4:20 PM

I going to use the ps02 as an outboard pedal for practicing w/ my band, can anyone give me some hints on how to get it to sound best. Should I run it straight through the inuput, which would mean I would have to manually switch it by hand from clean to distortion? Or should I run it through the FX input of my amp and use the amp pedal to switch the FX line on and off? Another concern is that I know the PS02 is a little touchy w/ power supplies, is it even a good idea to use the ps02 in this manner?

If anyone is using the ps02 like this (or have any good patch settings that work well through and amp), please tell me what I can do...

Good QuestionNovember 12 2001, 9:57 PM

Daled … if someone knows how to do this I would also like to know. The only way I could get what I thought was really good sounds from my guitar amp was by using the output mixer patches and sending the stereo output of PS-02 directly into the Effects Loop Stereo Receive of my guitar amp ... unfortunately this only works for playing recoreded PS-02 songs because when using the mixer patches this disconnects the guitar input to PS-02. Maybe I’ve missed something that someone else can point out.

The only way I'd even bother trying to use this live is with a full range cabinet. If you use it with your guitar amp (and maybe even a full range cab) its gonna sound like crap. I love it through the headphones but through a real amp or the PA it was just not happening.

I like it...November 13 2001, 1:39 PM

I use it through a few amps, and it sounds great through my 30-watt class-A tube amp. The amp is really sparkly, and I have to make some adjustments to the FX, but I have had great results. In fact, models like the MATCHLESS sound much better, IMHO, through an amp than the headphones...you get more of the straining tube lag, more of the soulful tubular sizzle this way.

But you've REALLY got to watch the EQ settings through an amp. Many of the presests sound HORRIBLE through an actual amp b/c they're made to sound good on headphones or tape. I just bypass the EQ block and fiddle with the amp tone knobs from there.

Realistically, though, I don't think I would expose the PS-02 to gig-type situations unless it was a last resort, i.e. my amp catches on fire (it's happened, believe it or not). I just feel like it's a tad fragile and could easily get squashed at a gig.

thanksNovember 13 2001, 6:50 PM

thanks guys,

I wouldnt have actually considered using the ps02 as an FX pedal but Ive got a "tryout" for a local band, and Im not exactly too happy with the distortion from my amp (peavey bandit 112 w/epiphone LP. If anyone knows how to dial some great OD tones from this amp, please let me know) so I thought Id use the Ps02 temporarily.

Compact little front endNovember 26 2001, 4:13 AM

I'd have to agree that I'd also have some trepidation using this little gem at a gig, or in conjunction with flame-throwing amps (which, by the way, is very cool!). However, it is super versitile and screams out for demo, practice and close-up-and-personal applications. I'd run it thru the main input, keeping the amp dry and unsaturated, and use the amps EQ, because the ps-02 does have a bypass button, and a handy chromatic tuner. But, if your amp or mixer supports it, you might try running it through the FX loop (amp fx-send to PS-02-in, PS-02-out to amp fx-return). This'll give you more amp-side and ps-02-side options. For example, you can control what you send through the ps-02 from your amp or board. If you don't have a mixer, you can use the aux-in on the ps-02 as another channel (in the record menu, select 'ai' as the source). I've been meaning to run my ps-02 through one of my clean flat PAs, and play with the cabinet simulators. I'm interested in seeing how it compares to SoundForge's Acoustic modeller and my Behringer Virtualizer. If anyone has tried this, I'd love to hear about it!

PS: In general, I am of the opinion that it's not good to cascade a bunch of digital stages due to A/D-D/A conversion error which is cumulative and is, at least to me, very pronounced and harsh in a few stages. Compressors/Expanders/Exciters can clean up(and contribute to) some of the mess... at a price of course. Eliminating noise also takes some signal with it.

Bypassing EQ BlockDecember 1 2001, 11:42 PM

Jesse & Root5 ... your right about this sounding much better. I haven't tried fiddling much with other settings but with PS-02 Output into my amps input it sounds much better after bypassing the EQ block on PS-02 ... thanks for the tip.
