Owning a PS-02, PXR4 and BR532
November 5 2001 at 9:05 PM
Chris Hurley

As of this afternoon, I own all three of the smartmedia multitracks (at least briefly. It looks as if all but one will be going back).

A couple of minor comments:

Despite looking really professional and sporting a very useful jog control, the preamp on the BR-532 sounds like CRAP. If you engage the 'preamp' portion of any patch, a faint buzz can be heard when you play. Its sort of like a sizzle. Its not the same as noise, if you turn off the noise gate you get a regular sort of hiss. The guitar effects are uninspiring as can be. I think this unit has lots of nice features, but coming from Boss, I'd expect a decent guitar input, which it lacks.

The PXR-4 is so non-intuitive as to be ridiculous. I had to break out the manual just to see how to get guitar effects out of the thing. Its nice and compact, being only slightly larger than the PS-02, but its a sunafabitch to use.

Of the two, I'm going to try and spend a little time with the PXR4 to see if there are any decent tones in it. From what I heard so far, they are rather poor.

I rather regret that my PS-02 sold on ebay this afternoon. I'm out about $80 or so in shipping and losses on the entire episode and it turns out I had the right one to begin with.

Enjoy your PS-02!

Your loss our gainNovember 8 2001, 9:20 AM

Thanks for the review and the info. Too bad you sold your PS-02, but it's obviously nice for us PS-02 users to hear that we have "the right one". At this point I'm so comfortable using the PS-02 it would take a lot for me to switch to another unit, especially when they all seem to cost more than the Zoom.

Again, thanks for this info

Well, I've got another PS02 on the way, so I'll be back in the fold soon.

Heh! I was waiting towards the end of the auction and I got a damned phone call. When I realized that I'd forgotten about the auction, I went to the page and it had 30 seconds left! In ultra-panic mode, I put my bid down and hit submit. I was the high bidder with 2 seconds.

Hopefully its in good shape. He said he bought it in June and has the receipt.

I didn't know you could get new ones for $269 or I'd probably have done that.

New PS02... whew!November 14 2001, 6:11 PM

I just got a second PS-02 today (after foolishly selling the first one) and it sounds just as good as I remember it. This is the best of the bunch, folks!

When these things drop to $150 or so, they will be a 'must have' accessory for every guitar case.
