Simply starting a recording should not do anything bad unless:
The memory card is full. Check the available CRD space.
Or the battery power is to low to perform power consuming tasks, (like wrighting tracks).
The PS02 can sit idle when not accessing the SmartCard for long pieriods of time, but draws a lot more power when writing to it and may suddenly fail. Watch the power level indicator when on battery power.
