HI
i just recieved a magazine from Korg this morning
featuring the new pxr4,it looks good
but how will it compare to the "original" the ps02
it will take 128mb smartcard
it connects directly to usb
but is it just a clone??????
The absence of a USB port on the PS-02 is kind of disappointing but I'll tell you one of the most impressive things to me is the mic! I wonder if either the Boss or the Korg have as good of a mic on board. The one on the PS-02 is rich and lively from what I can tell so far. Quite an asset.

I've got a PXR4 on order from Zzounds that ships on November 4. I'm planning on doing a side-by-side comparison with my PS-02 and keeping the winner. On paper, the PXR4's advantages include the USB port, the 128mb card capability, the extra track, the longer battery life, the longer recording time/mb of Smartmedia and the time stretch/compress capabilities. But I'm really fond of my PS-02, so the PXR4 is going to have to really impress me in order to convince me to sell the Zoom.

The PS-02 clips on your belt. Maybe you can wear the PXR4 around your neck like Flava Flav.

Big Comparison?

I will soon have one each of the PXR4, PS02 and BR532. Before I sell them all (which is probably pretty likely), I'll be comparing them. Anyone have any suggestions of things I should look at while comparing them?

do the px & br both have built in effects? the great thing about the ps for me is that you can plug your electric guitar in and record a whole song with different effects, and they sound pretty good too.
im not blindly loyal to the ps but Ill try them out in the store before i change.

The best thing about the ps-02 is that it makes a great pre-amp for recording to tape. Also, after you track you can run outs from your mixer back into the ps-02 to use the mixdown effects when mastering.

PXR4 effects are crap

The PS-02 has the best sounding preamp of the whole lot. Both the Boss and Korg were less interesting sounding, but at least the Boss could sound semi-realistic. I didn't find any presets in the Korg that could serve as starting points for a decent sound. The raw tone of it sucks.

I've been thinking about getting a PS02, so it's been great to read all your postings here... I love my old Zoom 9002 headphone amp/processor... for those of you familiar with it, although it's 8 year old technology, the tones and patches are head and shoulders above the Pandora PX-3, which I also have. I bought the Pandora because I thought that Korg might catch up tonewise after 8 years, and because they discontinued the rechargeable batteries for the Zoom (cant' get them anywhere) which means you are stuck with a wall wart.
I suspected that the new Korg PXR4 would probably have bad tones like the Pandora, and so far, your postings seem to confirm that. So, in spite of some nice features, I think I will forego the Korg and go for the tone of the Zoom... should make a nice replacement for my old 9002. Mr. Hurley is right about Korg tones... they are dead, flat, the effects sound stifled, the compression and sustain on the guitar tones suck. I wish the Pandora sounded better, but I reach for the Zoom everytime.
I will write you guys with a comparison of the 9002 tones vs the PS02, if you are interested. Should be picking one up next week, sometime.

Unfortunately my side-by-side is going to be delayed a bit as the ship date on my PXR4 just got bumped to 11/25. I'll keep y'all posted.

I'm surprised to hear the KORG sounds bad. Their keyboard sounds and effects sound outstanding. Guess that doesn't translate well to guitar.

Well, I'm sure everyone knows how all presets universally sound bad. Hopefully one of them sparks something with you and you can make a couple of tweaks (like dumping the gazillion soupy effects on the raw tone) and end up with something cool.
With the PXR4 I never got such a spark. Flipping through the patches was like: 'awful... awful... f'ing terrible... what the hell!?...'
The BR532 isn't as bad. Its main offense is that the presets are just dead sounding rather than sounding like they came from a dinky little plastic box. Plus there is the odd sizzle on even the clean tones in the unit. I've commented about this elsewhere.
I'm surprised all to hell to find that the PS02 is the winner. I thought it sounded good before I got the others, so I figured they would be dynamite.
