Mic-In or Line-In
October 16 2001 at 8:16 AM

Hi,
I'm about to buy a notebook (SONY FX190). The embedded sound card has only a Mic-In entry. Do I loose in Quality if i connect the headphone output from my PS-O2 to the mic-in entry in the laptop (instead of going into a line-in)? The vendor told to be careful with the volume of the signal coming in, it might cause damage to the sound card! Should I buy this thing in order to save my work, since SMARTMEDIA can only be used to save Audio tracks?

Thank guys!

Hopefully, you're going to use the laptop for more than backing up the sound files. To answer your specific question, you should be able to adjust the volume of the input into the mic jack on the control panel (under settings on the start menu) for sounds. Lower the volume as needed on both the control panel and on the PS-02 to avoid overdriving the input. You will need software to record the final mix on your hard drive. I do this on a Mac iBook usually so I can't tell you about a specific program for a WinPC (but the settings I described above are for Windows). Of course, you can't change the mix once you've recorded it down to stereo on your laptop. Alternatively, you can buy a card-reader that reads the smartmedia cards. There is free software on the zoom site to manage the files on the card. You can back up your song tracks in this manner.

Something to Check ForOctober 16 2001, 10:02 PM

FooF ... you may loose the stereo as some mic inputs are designed with a different intent and may be mono ... something to check before you buy.

Also there may be a check box under an Advanced Setting for the Mic-In that will allow you to turn off a 20db boost that the line input won't have ... my PC has that feature.
