ps-02, boss br-532 or 323 drum machine? September 28 2001 at 1:30 PM
I am going to buy a multi track but, which is better? the ps-02 or the boss? also, is that extra track on the 323 in stereo or mono? if it is in mono that will rule out that option. any ideas?
Its pretty funny that you've come to a page dedicated to PS-02 to ask if it's better than boss. I'll try to be as unbiased as possible. It really depends what you're after. I would suggest you research it - both machines have positives and negatives. PS-02 has one less track but I wouldn't describe the br-532 as a portable machine.
As for the drum machine I'm not sure what you are talking about...if you mean that the signal will only come out of the right or left channel(mono) then I don't think you have any worries cos you'll hear the signal in both headphones.

Hey, I kind of went through the same thing as you are. I decided on the PS-02 because I liked it and the Boss was not being shipped yet. About the Boss, I can't stand the 70 "hip-hop" drums they have. IMHO, bosses makes killer "hip-hop" drums, but, unfortuntely, that is all. On the other hand, the drums in the PS-02 are also cheesy. I actually use a Zoom RT-123. I think alot of people use something like that. If you want a few more options for about $20 more you can get the Alesis SR-16 (which has fills, thats about the only difference).
In terms of recording options, your not going to get too wide of a variance between the three major "hand-held" studios (Zoom, Boss, Korg). They all record at 32khz. They all have about the same number of patches, presets, and drum patterns (they all vary in sound, depending on maker, of course).
In other words, they all have suttle nuissances. I highly recommend not making an impulsive descision. Check them all out first and go with the one that works for you best!!
Good luck!!!

After futzing with the PS-02 for a week, I decided to return it and give the Boss BR532 a shot. My personal gripes with the PS-02 were:
1. Bass patterns locked to the drum patterns
2. No cut and paste functions
3. No support for 128MB cards available (and it looks like none is planned)
4. Too many Functions per Key (I got lost a bit and spent a LOT of time with the manual)
Also I don't really need the compactness of the PS-02.
So I spent the $100 extra for the BR532
I can't give you any pros or cons on the 532 yet, as I'll be getting it Wednesday. But I'm hoping it'll be a little more conducive to what I want, easier to compose the tune, play the bass track, and a little less confusing.
Don't get me wrong, the PS-02 is great for what it can do, it just doesn't do what I need it to do for me.

BR532 vs PS-02

I did the same thing and boy was I sorry. The guitar tone of the BR532 was awful in my opinion. Even the clean tones have a hint of sizzle on them that you can't adjust out with any setting of input gain or volume knob. Turn off the amp sim (leaving other effects) and it goes away.
Also, the drums were much worse than the PS-02 to me. They sounded lifeless and very sterile. It may be because they were dry.
The controls on the unit (especially the jog) are nice, but I couldn't get past the poor sounding guitar tone.
Fortunately for the BR532, it is in good company the PXR4 sounds even worse. And if you think the PS-02 has too many functions per key (which I don't agree with) you should try the PXR4. It is the pinnacle of poor user interface in my opinion.
I've won another PS-02 on ebay after selling mine and I'm looking forward to getting it back. If anyone was thinking of trying those other devices to replace the PS-02, you may want to think again. The BR532 would be a nice recorder to use with some other preamp, however.
YMMV

Zoom should be paying me, but they aren't... I just get interested in various subjects and get all in them for a while.

The real competition is between the PS-02 and PXR4!

I think if you want to record your own music and travel a lot, the BR-532 is out of the question because it is too big. A comparison between the PS-02 and the PXR4 would interest me. Even though the PS-02 may sound better, that still doesn't justify having one less track, no cut and paste capabilities, and no USB. Sure I like the Bass on the PS-02, but if I want bass, I just play my own bass for the track, which is much nicer than a bass track that is static the whole time. The PS-02 does have an advantage in that the drum patterns are able to be arranged into intro, fill, etc, but the fact that you can't use 128 MB cards, and that you have to buy extra stuff to be able to transfer your songs into your computer doesn't appeal to me. I have a POD, so the sounds of the PXR4 or PS-02 are just a bonus, because the POD sounds way better than both of them. One thing that I can't figure out about the PXR4 is how to just jam on guitar and hear it in both earpieces. I haven't been able to figure that out!

Sampling rate

Is it true that the Br-532 record in 32 kHz sampling rate? I thought it allowed to record at 44 kHz?
