Mixing Down Technique September 26 2001 at 2:37 AM | Stiffler

| I was just wondering whether people could tell me their technique when mixing down on the PS-02. I have AKG K-66 headphones but I feel these give an unrealistic impression of what a song will sound like(to much bottom end) so I use standard stereo speakers to mix. I make sure when I record all inputs are going up to 4 or 5 dots but when I put a Mixdown patch on it these dots(in the audio menu) go up to 6,7 or even 8. This creates some clipping and distortion. Should I eliminate this by turning the Mixdown patch level down or reducing the low and/or high end eq??
Any other tips for mixing??And while I have centre stage has anyone else noticed two little holes on the top left hand edge of the PS-02? Is this for a carry string(I don't know what its called) like a digital camera? Thanks~! |

You are recording too hot. SEt your levels with the patch on that you want to record with (not the mixing patch of course) and try to keep in the middle of the screen (4 dots). It's not clear to me if that's what you're doing, or if you're recording up in the 6 to 8 range.
On playback keep the volume low, around 2 on the volume pot. Listen to the output, if it's distorting go lower. Check the levels you are recording on your computer and make sure you aren't peaking. Any peaks will sound bad and clicky.
Hope that helps |

You seem to have misunderstood my post. I record so that the dots are peaking at 4 and occasionally(rarely) spilling into 5 dots. My problem is that when a mixdown patch is added the dots in the audio menu start peaking at 6 and occasionally reading 7( I should add there are only 7 dots - didn't have the PS-02 with me) I was wondering if I should combat this by lowering the mixdown patch level or fideling with the eq in effect edit mode...or is it acceptable for the song to be peaking that high on playback when a mixdown patch is added? |

Ok, so on play back your up around 6 and 7. That's fine. What you should be fiddling with is the volume control on the side of the Zoom, start around 2 or lower, and look at the meters on whatever you are recording with, make sure they aren't peaking. If the sound is ok on the Zoom when you listen with headphones, no need to adjust the levels in the patch. If it's distorting in the phones, I'd stay away from the EQ and instead just lower the overall patch level. |

Yeah pretty much as I thought...I just pretty much wanted to know if it was better to have a high playback signal and just turn down the headphones when recording onto computer or if the sound was more optimum with the signal down and the headphones up. I'll try both ways.
Thanks
P.S Has anyone solved the mystery of those holes on the top left hand edge of the PS-02 |
